How Much Sleep in Required?

There are some people who think they do not need a full daily quantity of sleep hours, and often put their bodies into a cycle that is accustomed to no sleep.  When not getting enough rest for the body, there eventually will be health consequences.

There is no fixed rule that works for all people but for general purposes, 8 hours has been a recommendation for decades in most western medical advisement literature.  Perhaps an adequate amount of sleep is between 6 to 8 hours on a daily basis according to many websites.

Is there an Additional Option for Supplementing Sleep?

There is an additional option, which has become more widely accepted and recommended in the last few decades by many Doctors.  The additional option is to take what is often called a "power nap" during the day.

A power nap can be taken any-time.  As a common usage is to take the power nap when coming home from work in the afternoon, before the evening begins.  There is an abundance of medical information on benefits of power naps, which is briefly discussed below in this topic.

How Long To Nap

The following is a recommendation from Dr Michael Breus:

If you take it longer than 30 minutes, you end up in deep sleep. Have you ever taken a nap and felt worse when you woke up? That s what s happening you re sleeping too long and you re going into a stage of sleep that s very difficult to get out of.

Sleep research Doctors, state that a nap has the ability to do a complete "computer type-of" reboot for your brain.  There are many benefits:

But what a lot of people don t know is that taking a nap requires a little bit of technique. It s almost an art form. The Wall Street Journal offers some recommendations on what it takes to master the art of napping.

The sleep experts in the article say a 10-to-20-minute power nap gives you the best results.  For a quick refresh, napping for 10-20 minutes is perfect to increase alertness and energy. But depending on what you are looking to get out of your nap, you may want to nap for a longer period of time.

A Temporary Affect

For those who are not accustomed to taking naps, there may be a temporary downside which depends upon the length of a nap.  Some people may feel and notice some sluggishness initially after waking up.  Usually, according to many research sites, the person will quickly feel more vibrant and refreshed after only a few minutes.
